Spherical rollers set at an angle to the axis: carries axial load together with radial load and compensates for misalignment. Used in heavily loaded assemblies, including vertical shafts.
Where it is used
Vertical shafts under constant axial pressure: cone crushers, vertical mills, pump and propeller shaft thrust bearings, extruders, crane hooks, hydro turbines. Works where the shaft deflects under load while the support must remain aligned.
When not to use
It does not work as a radial support: radial load is permissible only together with axial load and up to about 55% of it. It does not tolerate unloading: without a minimum axial force the rollers slide. In a high-speed assembly it does not replace a thrust ball bearing, as its limiting speed is an order of magnitude lower.
