Carries axial load only: single direction designs in one direction, double direction designs in both. It takes no radial load, so another support has to locate the shaft.
Where it is used
Vertical shafts of mixers and centrifuges, rotary tables and slewing rings, screw jacks, machine tool centres and tailstocks, worm gearboxes as the axial force support. It always works together with a radial bearing that centres the shaft.
When not to use
Do not fit it instead of an angular contact or tapered roller bearing: this type takes no radial component at all. The washers tilt, the balls press against the cage and destroy it, and the assembly seizes. It also cannot be the only support of a shaft, as it has nothing to centre it with. Mind the lower limit too: under too little load the balls slide instead of rolling, so a minimum axial load must come from a spring or the weight of the assembly.
