Where it is used
Gearboxes and transfer cases, steering columns, axial piston pumps and hydraulic motors, compressors, planet gear faces in planetary gear sets. Used where an axial support has to fit into a few millimetres of height.
When not to use
It takes no radial load at all. The needle and cage assembly runs only on ground washers or on faces with a hardness of about 58–64 HRC: on an unhardened face the raceway gets dented. In a high-speed assembly it does not replace a thrust ball bearing.
