Where it is used
Rotor supports in electric motors, fan and centrifugal pump shafts, intermediate shafts of helical gearboxes, conveyor idlers. In other words, assemblies where the shaft is rigid, the supports are aligned by machined housing bores and the load is moderate and mainly radial.
When not to use
Do not fit it instead of a tapered roller or angular contact bearing where a constant axial load is present: the ball climbs to the edge of the groove, the edge cuts off the contact area and the raceway spalls long before the calculated life. Do not fit it instead of a spherical roller bearing on misaligned supports: the permissible misalignment of a deep groove is measured in minutes of arc, not degrees, so a deflecting shaft will jam the bearing.
