Needle rollers give a low cross-section for the same radial load capacity, so the assembly is more compact and lighter. It takes no axial load.
Where it is used
Connecting rod ends and piston pins, universal joint spiders, gearbox and transfer case shafts, cam and lever mechanisms, planetary gear sets, pumps. Used where the radial space is strictly limited while the radial load is high.
When not to use
Do not fit it instead of a ball bearing as a plain shaft support: it takes no axial load at all and does not locate the shaft axially, so the shaft will move along its axis at the first axial force. Designs without an inner ring (needle cage, drawn cup) need the shaft journal itself as the raceway, hardened to 58–64 HRC and ground. On an unhardened shaft the needles will dent the raceway within hours of operation.
